Job Summary

National Training Specialists are responsible for product expertise for their assigned product categories and banners. They utilize this expert knowledge to assess training needs, develop training programs, co-ordinate product knowledge (PK) events, and deliver PK training to front-line managers and employees. Although the National Training Specialist’s primary focus is the development and maintenance of training programs, they will also spend time in the stores in order to maintain awareness of store issues and to measure and assess the effectiveness of their training materials and programs.

Key Accountabilities

• Develop and maintain product training programs for an assigned group of product categories. In this case, Footwear.
• Development and maintenance of product training programs, which includes:
• Development of E-Learning courses, Instructor-led courses and Self-Learning Guides for the FGL Sports Retail College
• Coordination and facilitation of product knowledge (PK) “PRO Camps”
• Coordination and execution of regional, vendor PK events
• Coordination, development and execution of training support pieces for new product initiatives.
• Regular communication with the stores regarding new product knowledge requirements.
• Work closely with all key training stakeholders to identify and prioritize training needs for each category.
• Ensure an understanding of FGL Sports short and long-term business objectives and ensure all elements of training are aligned with and promote the company’s strategy and objectives.
• Maintain a deep knowledge of assigned product categories and track product performance.
• Closely monitor trends and best practices in the retail industry and assess trends and best practices with respect to applicability to training at FGL Sports.
• Partner with Manager – Product Training to critique the functionality of existing programs, processes and tools and make recommendations for improvement.
• Conduct regular in-store visits and partner with front-line management to evaluate and measure the effectiveness of all training programs. Recommend changes as required.
• Track, measure and evaluate the effectiveness of training programs. Recommend changes as required.
• Participate in and assist with the delivery of training for new store openings as required.


• Post-secondary education in Business or Education or a related field
• Strong understanding of store retail operations.
• Retail Sporting Goods management / Store General Manager experience preferred
• Previous training experience or demonstrated ability required
• Instructional-design experience
• Active participation and experience in sports and activities, with a special interest in assigned Training categories
• Microsoft Office experience (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
